Sénoufo Sejen bird Ivory Coast Wood and metal H. 19 cm - L. 33 cm Provenance: Former - Former Charles Ratton collection, Paris Sometimes called kasingele (the first ancestor) or poropia nong (mother of the poro child), the bird was a principal symbol of poro leadership. Carried in procession, it was displayed at initiations and certain funeral rituals. According to tradition, bird figures referred to both the physical and intellectual aspects of life. They could also be offered to the most deserving farmers as a reward. Enriched with two fledglings, symbolizing the champion's next offspring, they were brandished on a pole several meters long.
