Nok Sculpture - Lot 14
Nok Sculpture Nigeria According to thermoluminescence: circa 1st - 3rd century A.D. Terracotta H. 39 cm A CIRAM thermoluminescence test dated February 19, 2020 will be given to the buyer. The Nok sculptures were discovered in Nigeria in the early 20th century. Spread over a territory the size of Austria, they immediately fascinated the West. The first fragments were found in 1928, gradually followed by the discovery of whole statues representing anthropomorphic figures. The figure is depicted kneeling on a pedestal, its head adorned with a multitude of buns. In a remarkable state of preservation, despite the missing arms, this terracotta statue is an eloquent testimony to ancient Nok sculpture.
