Koro figurative cup - Lot 16
Koro figurative cup
Nigeria
Wood
H. 55 cm
Ceremonial bowls, known as gbene, are characteristic objects of the Koro culture. Used during "ceremonial sacrifices and second funeral rites, to drink and pour libations of beer and palm wine" (Roy Sieber), the cup was directly integrated into a half-man, half-animal figure.
This one represents an anthropomorphic figure standing upright. The features are minimalist. Volumes are uncluttered. Hands and feet are lightly webbed. A geometric design is finely incised on the torso and arms. These delicate scarifications are repeated on the figure's back.
