Lobi statue - Lot 38
Lobi statue Burkina Faso Wood H. 90 cm Provenance: - Former Du Chastel de la Howarderie collection, Belgium Imposing male representation of bateba ti puo. As indicated by its posture (arms raised) and imposing size, it was used for protective purposes, to ward off witchcraft. These statues were also used to protect against disease. This object is particularly remarkable for its proportions, but also for the quality of the carving. The slightly inclined head rests on a powerful bust with a deep torso. The navel protrudes slightly. The right arm is positioned alongside the body, while the larger left arm points skyward. Within the corpus of Lobi statuary, this one can be considered remarkable.
