Box representing a rooster - Lot 40
Box representing a rooster Yoruba, Nigeria Bronze H. 23 cm Provenance: - Former Pierre Amrouche collection, France / Togo The Yoruba live in Nigeria, on the left bank of the Niger River. Through trade and conquest, they gained regional importance and became one of the largest states in West Africa in the 18th century. This richly carved bronze certainly contained kola nuts used for divination, a practice at the heart of Yoruba religious life. The kola nuts transmitted messages or prescriptions for action, dictated by spiritual forces. This remarkable piece is divided into two parts: a base or bowl and a magnificent carved lid evoking a bird, probably a rooster.
