Large figure seated on a stool - Lot 113
Large figure seated on a stool Colima culture, western Mexico Protoclassic period, 100 BC - 250 A.D. Terra cotta with reddish-brown slip H. 59 cm - L. 35 cm (Damage and missing parts) Provenance : - Galerie E. Deletaille, certificate dated 12/12/1978 - Former Pierre de Strycker collection A very similar statue is reproduced in the book Pre-Columbian Art of Mexico and central America, Abrams, New York, 1968, p.81, no. 57. These large, static figurines, usually seated on a small stool, are distinguished from other hollow figures from the Colima region by their exceptional size and also by their more expressive face and attitude. This type of figure always wears spherical decorations on the shoulders, certainly representing a tattoo of belonging.
