In-4, cold-stamped brown calf, framed with cold-stamped fillets and scrolls, gilt iron in the corners, gilt fleuron in the center, gilt and chased edges (period binding). Renouard, Estienne, p. 28, no. 2. Robert Estienne's first separate edition of these four books of the Bible, published a few months after his monumental and famous Bible of 1527-1528. A fine copy, in an interesting Parisian cold-stamped binding of the period, decorated with roulettes very similar to those reproduced by Denise Gid in the Catalogue des reliures françaises estampées à froid, XVe-XVIe siècle de la Bibliothèque Mazarine, 1984, pl. 65, n°560 and pl. 93, n°148. Handwritten bookplate dated 1593 at the top of the title. Handwritten ex-dono dated 1747 to the Preaching Brothers of Metz (with their 18th-century engraved bookplate). Slight wetness at head of first few leaves. Joints, covers and corners restored.
