An indispensable complement to the author's memoir published two years earlier under the title Abolition de l'esclavage. Here, Schoelcher renews his call for the emancipation of the Blacks and paints a sad picture of the living conditions of slaves in the French West Indies. The work ends with Proverbes et locutions nègres (pp. 417-434) and a table showing the status of all freedoms granted in Martinique from February 1830 to April 1840 (a total of over 20,000 people).
