GUIBELET (Jourdain). - Lot 66
GUIBELET (Jourdain). Three philosophical discourses. Évreux, Antoine Le Marié, 1603. In-8, limp vellum, title in ink on spine (contemporary binding). First edition, decorated with a fine title-frontispiece engraved by Léonard Gaultier and 2 surprising intaglio anatomical plates showing Adam and Eve each holding the object of sin, viscera exposed. Jourdain Guibelet was one of the pioneers in the medical study of depression. His book contains two particularly interesting treatises: one on the generation of man, with a chapter on the generation of monsters and another on demons; the other discourse, focusing on melancholy, its symptoms and the means to cure it, is said to be one of the first scientific studies on humors and depression. (Caillet, n°4834; Yve-Plessis, n°589.) This very rare work is one of the first books printed in Évreux, where printing was introduced by Antoine Le Marié around 1600 (cf. Deschamps, col. 444, and Lepreux, t. III, pp. 411-413). Engraved armorial bookplate glued to upper flyleaf.
