HUGO (Hermann). The Siege of the City of Breda Conquered by the Arms of King Philip IV. Antwerp, Ex Officina Plantiniana [Balthasar Moretus], 1631. Small folio, shagreened calf, smooth spine decorated throughout, red title page, yellow edges (Binding circa 1800). First French edition, translated by Philippe Chifflet, of this account of the Spanish conquest of the town of Breda in North Brabant in 1625. Handsome copper-engraved title-frontispiece by Pierre-Paul Rubens, 13 engraved plans, including 6 in the text and 7 double-page plans, plus 2 figures in the text. In this copy, 2 plans engraved in the text have been covered by other proofs of the same kind. Armorial bookplates and dry seals bearing the motto Sapere aude (Anglo-Saxon provenance). Some foxing to last few leaves. Spine faded.
