BURTY (Philippe). - Ph. Burty Collection. Japanese and Chinese works of art to be sold in Paris at the Galeries Durand-Ruel, from Monday 23rd to Saturday 28th March 1891. S.l.n.d. [1891]. Large in-8, bradel paper-covered boards with embroidery motifs (peacock in vegetation), fawn title page, red edges (Binding of the period). Sales catalog for this collection assembled by Philippe Burty (1830-1890), an art dealer and critic who coined the term Japonisme and contributed to the development of a taste for Japanese art and culture in the second half of the 19th century. Approx. 1,740 lots described: lacquerware, inrô, netsuke, lacquered wooden objects, armor, sword guards, smoking utensils, kanamono, ceramics, iron, bronze and silver objects, cloisonné enamels, fabrics, etc. An attractive copy in Japanese-decorated boards. Small crack along spine, discrete restorations to hinges.
