SHERLOCK HOLMES. - STRAND MAGAZINE (The). An illustrated monthly. Edited by George Newnes. London, G. Newnes, 1891-1904. 28 volumes large in-8, blue cloth boards printed in black, smooth spines titled in gold and black, edges speckled with red (Publisher's binding).
Head of the Strand Magazine collection, an illustrated periodical to which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a major contributor, publishing his short stories in serial form for the first time.
Here we find the pre-original version of The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901-1902), with illustrations by Sidney Paget, and the pre-originals of some forty other short stories in the famous cycle of the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
Also included are the saga of Brigadier Gerard, the novel Rodney Stone, several articles including Life on a Greenland Whaler (about his Arctic voyage), the novel Tragedy of Korosko, the short story The Lord of Chateau Noir and the Round the Fire series.
He also wrote the pre-original for H.G. Wells' famous novel The First Men in the Moon (1900-1901).
The Strand Magazine appeared from 1891 to 1950.
A few stains on the boards, traces of rubbing, volume X is detached from the spine.
