Male head in bronze - Lot 10
Male head in bronze
Bronze with shaded patina
12th-century Rheno-Mosan workshop
H. 13 cm - W. 6 cm - D. 10 cm
This small patinated bronze head features hair in irregular spiral curls; the beard and drooping moustache with rectilinear striations, as well as the antique-style eyes, evoke Carolingian and Ottonian models such as the figures on the Bernward column in Hildesheim; however, the ears, hair and tapering nasal bridge suggest that this head dates from the end of the Salian period in the Rheno-Mosan area in the 12th century.
