BRETON André. 8 SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LETTERS, ONE SIGNED AUTOGRA - Lot 32
BRETON André. 8 SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LETTERS, ONE SIGNED AUTOGRAPH BILL AND TWO SIGNED AUTOGRAPH POST CARDS to Edmond BOMSEL. Paris and Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, 1948-1963, 12 pages in-4, 7 envelopes preserved. Important correspondence addressed to Edmond Bomsel, lawyer, collector and patron of the arts. He financed the opening of the Gradiva gallery and was administrator of the Sagittaire publishing house. Very friendly correspondence from André Breton to Edmond Bomsel, relating in part to the reprinting of certain Sagittaire works and to disputes with several publishers. Breton refused the reprint of the Manifestes du Surréalisme to Claude Gregory, director of the Club Français du Livre, and gave exclusive rights to Jean-Jacques Pauvert. Edmond Bomsel was one of the founders of the Compagnie de l'Art Brut: ... I think the Wölfli exhibition opening this afternoon is going to be a bit of an event... the Almanach de l'Art Brut is ready and I think it's coming along very well. It's just a pity we weren't able to make room for this Grünwald of automata, but I don't think you've been able to show them to Jean Dubuffet yet. In a letter André Breton draws footprints: ... I couldn't bring myself to speak so harshly to Claude Gregory, an intelligent and charming man who showed me the most friendly understanding in a critical circumstance. About a popular image offered by Bomsel: This gap towards the frame of leaves, flowers and seeds is extraordinarily sensitive in its restraint; it's also remarkable that a carpet is thrown under the feet which thus runs no risk of touching the water. The... pregnancy is delicately suggested... Mary's M in her left hand, the folds of her sperm dress (hell!), conjured up by the water lily on the right, a well-known antiaphrodisiac... The great revelation of our vacation was the discovery of the waffle and ostie moulds.... many times, Benoit and I decided that nothing could interest us more (this is very close to imagery). Enclosed: - An autograph draft of a letter from André Breton to Claude Gregory: Le Club français du livre à André Breton, 1 page in-8 in ink. - A typescript letter signed in part autograph from André Breton to publisher Jean-Claude Fasquelle, 1 page in-4 - Autograph letter signed by Claude Gregory to André Breton, 1 page in-4 - André Breton's death announcement addressed to Edmond Bomsel
