CHAISSAC Gaston. LETTRE AUTOGRAPHE SIGNÉE à l'éditeur Paul B - Lot 44
CHAISSAC Gaston. LETTRE AUTOGRAPHE SIGNÉE à l'éditeur Paul BOULOC et POÈME AUTOGRAPHE. 1947. 5 pages in-4 on school notebook leaves, under sealed cover, envelope retained.
Beautiful, poetic letter in which Chaissac describes the natural world around him and draws a parallel with his own situation... We're not so different from plants, and like them, recovery depends on uprooting, transplanting, the weather, the season, the resumption or cessation of sap, the care that's possible and not certain... He then evokes his older brother, who, like Antonin Artaud, was interned at Ville Evrard: ... My brother André René Chaissac wrote many letters from the city, which were said to be very interesting and sensible. He spent the longest time at the psychiatric hospital in Auxerre, where he died... and he had also been at Ville Evrard. It might be interesting to see whether any of the writings left in these asylums might be interesting enough to publish. Our friend Dr. Ferdière could do what is necessary to find them...
The poem is dedicated to Roland P., budding emir.
La daronne du mac des macs / Portant son précieux fardeau / Reçoit bien des salamalèques / Des gens qui d'un verre d'eau
Even benefit / When it becomes possible / In a land doomed to evil / From harmful beings.
CHAISSAC Gaston. 10 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED INCLUDING 2 WITH ORIGINAL DRAWINGS SIGNED to Gaston Ferdière. 20 pages in various formats, some in school notebooks [1955-1965 (two pages bear traces of burning with slight lack of text.
In a letter to Dr. Ferdière is a text entitled La Cabane ... You can publish Cabane in your collection on humor, and after all, it doesn't matter whether your editor is what's-his-name or what's-his-name... I'm known as a cabane, but I'm made of stone and I have a chimney. My roof, it's true, doesn't suit me because it's made of tin from old cans, and I've grown a lot of hair because of it.... once a little rat got in through a hole, he was very surprised that it was furnished and tidy, arrived boldly he got scared at the sight of objects used by man and left never to return. And a pretty brunette whom the cabanier let in exclaimed: but it's really here! she then said I love you, darling! ... ... I've just sent to New York a magazine called Carrousel, which the grocery store in Vix where they sell Corsican hazelnuts gives away free to its customers, and I've designed a cover for it... ....My life has been a long series of setbacks from which nothing has been able to pull me through. But I don't despair, and in an attempt to make effective contacts, I'm writing a book against modern art, which is far less ridiculous than painting men at my age. Incidentally, it's very easy to turn a peasant into a master of modern art in three lessons, so there's no need to make such a fuss about it as you do about modern art.
In one of the letters (incomplete), in red ink, he mentions Artaud: .... Breton writes that the traces of Artaud's ordeal remained inscribed on his face. That's quite true of me too. And I'm wondering whether it wouldn't be better for me to be crazy, as some people claim I am, than not to be able to stand up...
The two original drawings, one in ink, the other in pencil, are signed and dedicated to Gaston Ferdière.
