BOILEAU-DESPREAUX (Nicolas). Satires of Sieur D***. Amsterda - Lot 10
BOILEAU-DESPREAUX (Nicolas). Satires of Sieur D***. Amsterdam, Isaac Van Dyck, 1669. Small in-12 (126x70 mm) of [2] ff, 78 pp, 4 pp, long-grained midnight-blue morocco, wide lace in gilt frames with gilt coat of arms in center, very richly decorated ribbed spine, scrollwork at edges, small gilt inner lace, coral tabis lining and endpapers (Simier).
Charming edition including the first nine satires.
Brunet states that it appears to have been printed in Brussels by Foppens and that it reproduces the 1668 edition. The last pages contain an amusing satire on church people, not by Boileau himself.
"Of all the animals that rise in the air, walk on the earth, or swim in the sea, from Paris to Peru, from Japan to Rome, the silliest animal, in my opinion, is Man." (Satire VIII).
A very fine copy, elegantly bound by Simier with the arms of the Comte de Nédonchel.
From the libraries of Pieters (bookplate), René Choppin (bookplate), Alphonse Willems and the catalog of the Pierre Berès bookshop (December 1917, no. 571).
Corrigendum: paper browned.
Brunet I, 1056.
