DES PÉRIERS (Bonaventure). Nouvelles récréations et joyeux devis. Lyon, B. Rigaud, 1567. In-16 (114x71 mm) of 156 ff. ch. 3 to 156 and [4] ff. n. ch. (table), sign. A-Y, (A, blc), red morocco, gilded fillets around covers with "à la rose" small-iron decoration, ribbed spine decorated with the same motif, interior gilded roulette and fillets, gilded edges (Trautz-Bauzonnet, 1848). A very rare edition of this collection of 90 stories. It seems to be known only from this copy. It escaped the censuses of Tchemerzine, Brunet, Rothschild, Viollet-le-Duc and others. Only James Woodrow Hassell Jr. cites it from our copy in his study The French Editions of Des Périers Tales: a Bibliographical Study. He suggests that Tchemerzine may have confused our edition with Du Pré's of 1567. A superb copy acquired by Édouard Rahir (1862-1924) at the sale of Louis Loviot (1885-1918), librarian at the Arsenal. It sold for 3,005 fr. plus expenses. This prestigious provenance had not yet been found when this copy was sold at Jacques Bellon's 2010 auction (7,000). The "Au Lecteur" page after the title is missing, and has been replaced by a blank page. Baudrier, III, p. 249 (cites this copy). Graesse II, 371.
