Ndimu belly mask Makonde culture, Tanzania Wood with red padouk patina H. 45 cm 8000/10 000 Provenance: - Collected by Edward Klejman in the years - Private collection, Paris The end of initiation rites for young Makonde men was marked by the release of ndimu masks, worn by the men and depicting a young parturient woman. The torso of this mask is particularly graceful, showing a small, bulging belly with a protruding navel and small breasts that are still erect.
