Monumental Yakshi bust, Central Indian culture, 9th century. Beige sandstone,H. 49.5 cm Provenance : - Former private collection United States - Galerie Jacques Barrère, Paris. - Private collection, Paris (acquired in 2006) This bust with its magnified breasts belonged to one of the Yakshi, or tree goddesses, who symbolized fertility and whose sculpted presence protected the temples whose walls they adorned. The elaborate necklace of the gods, embellished with pendants, descends between the Yakshi's generous breasts to her waist.
