Very ancient representation of a mythical aso animal - Lot 28
Very ancient representation of a mythical aso animal Dayak culture, Borneo (Kalimantan), Indonesia 19th century or earlier Beautifully eroded ironwood H. 63 cm Provenance: Bruce Carpenter Collection, Bali - Bruce Carpenter Collection, Bali - Private collection, Paris The aso is commonly described as a hybrid being half-dog half-dragon. Considered a powerful protective figure, its representation is omnipresent in the Dayak universe and establishes a lineage's membership of nobility and power. The dynamism of this sculpture is admirable, showing a proud, roaring aso, victorious in combat, his rival's head resting between the powerful claws of his forelegs.
