Mother and Child Phemba Statuette - Lot 58
Mother and Child Phemba Statuette
Yombe culture, D.R. Congo
Wood with beautiful blond patina, glass eyes
H. 28.5 cm
Provenance :
- Galerie Alain de Monbrison
- Private collection, Paris
For the Yombe, a matrilineal society, phemba is a representation of the female ancestor who founded the clan, and remains its protector. Sculptures of her were used in rituals to combat infertility.
This example displays all the archetypes of the style: the woman is seated cross-legged, with her baby on her lap. Her body is adorned with a network of tribal scarification marks. She wears an elegant miter, an important accessory of power.
