The use of stilts by children and young adults for sport and play was widespread throughout Eastern Polynesia. The Marquesas Islands have marked their particularity by carving a tiki in high relief on the handle and intricately decorating the stirrup. Richly ornamented, stilts were used for symbolic and sporting jousting by adults during funeral celebrations.
