French School, c. 1640, circle of Claude VIGNON - Lot 149
French School, c. 1640, circle of Claude VIGNON The Lute Player Oil on canvas 101 x 76 cm The depiction of a woman playing the lute is one of the favorite motifs of 17th-century European painting. It can be Caravaggesque (Artemisia Gentileschi, Daret, Honthorst, and Ter Brugghen), or bourgeois (Metsu or Ter Borch). The instrument depicted here is a novelty: the Baroque lute, with its straight head, replacing the Renaissance lute, whose top formed an angle of nearly 90° with the neck. The dance being performed is also a novelty: a sarabande, which the Spanish invented at the end of the 16th century. Her pensive expression, her dress with wide sleeves, her jewelry, and her feathered hat indicate the importance of the figure depicted here. Note also the view of the landscape, a harmonious connection between nature and music.
