A plaque made of a brass-like alloy, embossed, chiseled and - Lot 54
A plaque made of a brass-like alloy, embossed, chiseled and gilded with a depiction of the allegory of Patience, represented by a reclining woman with a lamb beside her, against a background of drapery and a perspective view of an ancient city with a temple by the water. Southern Germany, Augsburg?, Master of the Cardinal Virtues and Deadly Sins, mid-16th century H. 8 cm - W. 12.2 cm (mounting hole) Provenance: - German collection in the 1970s This rare plaque is the one published in Ingrid Weber’s 1975 reference work. It was part of a series illustrating eight virtues and eight deadly sins intended to adorn an ebony cabinet, gilded bronze, mother-of-pearl, and églomée glass, which is believed to have been created by Wenzel Jammitzer around 1560/70 for Rudolf II and is now housed at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (inv. Kunstkammer, 3398, fig.). Unlike the cast and gilded bronze plaques of the cabinet, this one, made of a brass alloy that has been repoussé and chiseled, is therefore the original model. It is thus an interesting example created by an anonymous artist working in or around the workshop of the great Mannerist goldsmith Jamnitzer (Vienna, c. 1507 or 1508 – Nuremberg, 1585).
