A bronze plaque with a brown patina depicting the Triumph of - Lot 55
A bronze plaque with a brown patina depicting the Triumph of the Church, the composition of which is believed to be a free interpretation of a drawing dated 1595 by the Flemish Mannerist painter Jan van der Straert (1523–1605) (fig.). The triumphal chariot, drawn to the left by two unicorns, is driven by a half-naked bearded man; he carries four female figures: in the rear, Ecclesia (Latin for “Church”) seated on a ceremonial throne with a backrest crowned by a cherub’s head, a pair of keys in one hand, the dove of the Holy Spirit hovering above; in front of her, sitting cross-legged on the edge of the chariot, Hope, her arms crossed and her eyes raised to heaven; at the front of the chariot, Humility holding a scepter in one hand and a dove in the other, and Obedience, standing, with a yoke on her shoulders. Very fine quality of casting and patina. Netherlands, late 16th century H. 6.3 cm - W. 12.5 cm Works consulted: - J. Warren, The Wallace Collection, Plaquettes, vol.
