A bronze plaque with a black patina depicting an Oread remov - Lot 56
A bronze plaque with a black patina depicting an Oread removing a thorn from a satyr’s foot, based on a composition by Bartholomeus Spranger and engraved by Jan Müller in 1590 (fig.). Oread bends over the right foot of a young satyr to remove a thorn; a weeping nymph, her naked body girded with an animal skin, tenderly wraps her arm around her companion’s neck while a child satyr lifts her injured leg.
Netherlands, early 17th century
H. 10.3 cm - W. 7.3 cm
This plaque is unpublished and does not appear to be in any museum or collection. It offers a bronze reinterpretation of a drawing by the great Flemish Mannerist painter Bartholomeus Spranger (1546–1611)—who spent his career in the service of Rudolf II in Prague—by one of his Dutch compatriots, Jan Harmensz. Müller (1571–1628), for his part, never left his hometown of Amsterdam.
