Oval bronze plaque with a brown patina, decorated with a lau - Lot 57

Oval bronze plaque with a brown patina, decorated with a laureated left-facing profile of Emperor Domitian. Inscription in a speech bubble: .DOMIT.AVG.; the border is highlighted by a molded border. Italy, 16th century H. 10.4 cm - W. 8.3 cm (suspension hole) This profile of Domitian is part of the well-known series of the Twelve Caesars, similar to the one on display at the Bargello (inv. 603 B to 615 B). However, this one, with its molded frame, is very rare; in fact, only a plaque depicting Vespasian, held at the Grassi Museum in Leipzig, has been identified as comparable (inv. 1917.371).
