Set of four panels with wooden frames and diamond-shaped sta - Lot 77
Set of four panels with wooden frames and diamond-shaped stained-glass panels adorned with circular, oval, or square inserts in black, yellow, or polychrome: one pair measuring 167.5 x 74 cm and another measuring 167 x 88.3 cm.
They comprise a total of 44 reused elements, including: 32 small roundels approximately 5.3 cm in diameter, mostly in black and silver-yellow, images intended for use in a magic lantern. They depict picturesque characters, some based on engravings by Callot, such as duelists, hurdy-gurdy or guitar players, others depicting common folk or small trades, and still others with caricatured features; four depict ships; many of the medallions are accompanied by inscriptions in Dutch.
Originally, these small circular illustrated glass discs were inserted five by five into wooden panels about 40 cm long and 10 cm high so they could be fed into a magic lantern like slides. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam possesses an entire collection of them along with their projection apparatus (example inv. NG-2002-42, fig. a).
