LONGCHAMPS, le Sieur. / JANVIER, le Sieur.
L'Afrique divisée en tous ses etats dressée sur des nouveaux mémoires et sur les dernières observations... Paris, 1754. Col. Entoilé et encadré. Papier un peu jauni, quelques taches. Non examiné hors du cadre. - Paper slightly age toned, and with light staining. Two very small holes expertly restored. Backed on linen. Framed and glazed. Unexamined out of frame, overall in good condition. 1180 x 1270 mm. (R) Rare carte murale entourée d'une superbe bordure dans le style Rococo, constituée de 17 scènes à sujet historique retraçant la découverte de l'Afrique. - Uncommon wall map representing the African continent with Madagascar. In the lower right corner inset map of "Isle d'France levée en 1753". Surrounded by 17 elaborately engraved vignettes depicting events from African history. The focus of the vignettes is on the better known North African regions, however, there is also a great deal of attention paid to French commercial activities in Guinea. Insets showing the French arrival in Africa, the first commercial contacts between the French and inhabitants of Guinea. The arrival of Dutch and Portuguese in Africa, etc. In bottom two large panels in French and Spanish describing Africa's history. Geographically, the map is relatively progressive. The map adopts the eighteenth-century conceptions popularized by Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697- 1782). The coastlines are well defined, having been explored for over two-hundred and fifty years, however, the heart of Africa remains blanc. Janvier and Longchamps both sold maps from the Rue St. Jacques in Paris and came together around 1751 to collaborate in the expensive production of wall maps for the nobility and gentry of France. The two mapmakers continued the tradition of the publication of wall maps in France begun by Nolin in the late 17th century.
