[CARACCIOLI (Louis-Antoine, marquis de)]
The Table of Death, by the author of Self Enjoyment. New, revised, expanded & corrected edition. Frankfurt, Bassompierre, 1761. In-12, XVIII and 361 pp., 1 f.n.ch.: wove vellum painted green, triple gilt fillet, gilt emblem at the corners, smooth spine decorated with the same emblem repeated, inside roulette, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Metaphysical reflection on death. In chapter XVII, entitled Des apparitions, the author attempts to destroy the myth of ghosts, vampires, ghosts and other ghosts. Finally, the volume closes with a curious Dialogue between Palmire (a dead man) and Onuphre (a living man). This work by the Marquis of Caraccioli (1719-1803) is not listed by Caillet. (Dorbon, no. 619, for an edition dated 1765.) Macabre binding in green vellum, slightly weathered by time. It bears repeated gilt in the corners and on the spine a skull surmounting two intertwined shins. Ex-libris manuscript crossed out at the top of the title. Small wetness on a few leaves.
