PEIGNOT (Gabriel)
Historical and bibliographical research on autographs and autographs. Dijon, De l'Imprimerie de Frantin, 1836. In-8, 5 ff.n.ch. and 90 pp.: red morocco, triple golden fillet, ornate spine, inner wheel, gilt edges (Koehler). Original edition, printed in 180 copies. It is accompanied, as an epistle, by the facsimile of a letter from the author to his friend Bernard Joliet (2 leaves), bibliophile from Lyon. Interesting study conducted by Gabriel Peignot (1767-1849), the erudite bibliographer. The author traces the origin of the taste of autograph lovers, shows that autography (the art of engraving facsimiles) has contributed to spreading the taste for originals, lists the richest collections of this kind in the capital, and points out some remarkable pieces that have been sold at public auctions in Paris and London. A table of collectors' names and autograph letters cited in the book occupies pp. 79-90. A fine copy on daffodil paper, perfectly drawn up by Koehler. Ex-libris from the Armand Ripault (cat. 1924, no. 349) and Maurice Escoffier (Description raisonnée d'une petite collection de livres de bibliographies, no. 75) libraries. Bookplates bearing the monogram CMBHI and the motto Plus penser que dire, unidentified. (Milsand, Catalogue des ouvrages imprimés de Peignot, no. 115 - Vicar, VI, col. 483: no copies on coloured paper are mentioned).
