HERNANI or Castilian Honour. Paris, Mame and Delaunay-Vallée, 1830. In-8, fawn half calf with small green vellum corners, decorated smooth spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). ORIGINAL EDITION of this drama first performed on February 25, 1830. The first was the occasion of a heckling orchestrated by the young romantics and a battle led by Gautier and his famous red waistcoat. "Illustrating the theories set out in Cromwell's preface on the mixture of the sublime and the grotesque combined with the search for the natural, Hernani is the first original Romantic drama staged at the Théâtre-Français. It's a milestone in the history of the theatre..." (In French in the text, no. 244). Large ex-libris scraped off the first contreplat. Lack of angular paper pp. 131-132, some light freckles. Without the publisher's catalogue indicated by Carteret (12 pages).
