Brown-beige ceramic H. 48 cm Nayarit (Chinesco) seated female figure, brown-beige ceramic, Mexico H. 18 7/8 in Provenance: Art market, USA Christie's sale, Paris, 10 December 2003, n°483 Important French private collection Sotheby's sale, Paris, 30 October 2019, n°45 Private collection, Paris This very beautiful and large female statue of Nayarit culture belongs to the Lagunillas style, which is divided into five types defined by Hasso Von Winning (this parturiente belongs to type D). It is a woman sitting in a birthing position. Naked, she wears a simple belt, a necklace, many earrings and bracelets. Her triangular face and finely engraved hair are characteristic of this culture. This statuary was part of the funerary furniture of the village cultures of Western Mexico. Around the dead were stored rich offerings, including ceramic statuettes that give us a wide panorama of the customs and actors of that time. Thus are represented men and women in attitudes different from everyday life, but also musicians, jugglers, shamans, sick people, animals...
