? DOUBLE-BODIED VASE DEPICTING A WARRIOR JAMAICAN... - Lot 73 - Giquello
? DOUBLE-BODIED VASE DEPICTING A WARRIOR JAMAICAN CULTURE, MANABÍ PROVINCE, EQUATORIAL 100-500 AD. AD Beige ceramic and remains of blue, orange and white pigment H. 26.3 cm - W. 39 cm Jama-Coaque double effigy vessel of a warrior, buffware ceramic with blue, orange and white paint, Ecuador H. 10 3/8 in - W. 15 3/8 in Provenance: The Lands Beyond, New York Private American collection, New York,2003 Where the art of Chorrera emphasized static representations, the art of Jama-Coaque shows us figures of chiefs and high-ranking figures in movement. This double-bodied vessel depicts a warrior wearing a richly adorned costume with a large headdress decorated with a cat's head, a nariguera and ear discs. Finally, there is a large necklace and bracelets. Yellow and turquoise pigments were added after firing. Trade and wars followed one another during the period of regional development as chiefdoms multiplied along the Pacific coastal lowlands and in the valleys of Ecuador. These depictions confirm descriptions made by the Spanish in the sixteenth century, indicating that chiefs and high-ranking warriors were richly dressed and wore many gold jewels when they went to battle. ?
