Cute, curious and useful. Paris, Durand,... - Lot 73 - Giquello
Cute, curious and useful. Paris, Durand, 1777. In-12, dishes decorated with straw marquetry, two gilt rocaille iron frames delimit compartments of three colours, green, orange and straw, the centre is occupied by a large flowered branch, spine of morocco, fleurdelisé, lining of gilt dominot paper, gilt edges (Binding of the period). 2 folding maps, one of ecclesiastical France, the other of the surroundings of Paris. Extremely rare specimen of old binding in straw marquetry. Gruel, in his Manuel de l'amateur de reliures, t. II, p. 126, evokes this "original design applied to bookbinding" and reproduces a binding of this type dating from the 18th century. The decoration of our binding can be compared to the one reproduced by Mirjam Foot, n°188 of volume III of the Henry Davis Gift catalogue, which covers the same bindings but for the year 1778. Old bindings in straw marquetry, straw binding in English, are very rare.
