- Collection of 5 exhibits concerning the trial and conviction of Robert-François Damiens, accused of attempted regicide against Louis XIV. In-12, marbled calf, spine decorated, red title coin, red edges (Binding from the 18th century). Interesting collection, made up as follows by an 18th century amateur: - GROSLEY (Jean-Pierre). Letter from a patriot, in which the facts are reported which prove that the author of the attack on the King's life has accomplices, & the way in which his trial is being investigated. S.l.n.d. [1757]. - FITZ-JAMES (François, Duke of). Mandate of the Bishop of Soissons, Who orders that in all the Churches of his Diocese a solemnized Mass & the Te Deum be sung, in thanksgiving for the protection which it has pleased God to grant to this Kingdom, preserving the King from the danger which his sacred person has run. S.l.n.d. [1757]. - ARREST of the court of parliament, against Robert-François Damiens; by which he is declared to be duly affected & convinced of the crime of Parricide committed by him on the Person of the King. Paris, Simon, 1757. - REFLECTIONS on the attempt on the King's life on January 5. S.l.n.d. end]: March 7, 1757. These four works are accompanied by the very rare intaglio engraved plate depicting the torture of Damiens by quartering and captioned: Robert-François Damien [sic] executed in Paris on strike on March 28, 1757. Two other pieces, relating to the Jesuits and the attempted assassination in 1758 of Joseph I, King of Portugal, have been linked to the following: [HERBURT].
