MAZOT (François). The Picture of the Cross represented in the ceremonies of the Holy Mass, together with the Treasure of the devotion to the sufferings of Our Lord. I. C. Paris, Mazot, 1651 [at the end: September 20, 1653]. In-8, red morocco, gilt border, fleurs-de-lis, trace of laces, spine decorated, gilt edges (period binding). A very nice book whose text and illustrations are entirely engraved in intaglio. The copy includes 104 engravings: a title-frontispiece, a page of dedication to Charles de l'Aubespine marquis de Châteauneuf, accompanied by the portrait of the dedicatee, a page of notice to the reader, a title for the Litanies, 35 figures of the officiant during the mass accompanied by 35 pages of prayers; followed by 8 engravings for the Litanies themselves (text and figures, including in particular a portrait of Jesus and another of the Virgin Mary). The very beautiful suite of L'Histoire de David, which ends the volume, includes 20 engravings (including the title-frontispiece) which were added to the book from the second printing, and which give different psalms placed in frames illustrating scenes and characters from the Old Testament. The last page gives an excerpt of the privilege and bears the completion of printing of September 20, 1652 (date formerly modified with the pen to 1653). From the library of L. Froissart (ex-libris).
