VAUBAN- FILLEY (Louis).
Memoire pour faire du ciment conforme à celuy qui ce fait par le Jongueleur à Versailles. S.l.n.d. [at the end]: At Namur, this 21 Sept. 1693. Manuscript in-folio, 5 pages, marbled half calf, red morocco title-piece on the first board, smooth spine decorated with grotesque (Modern binding in the old taste). Technical manuscript signed by Louis Filley (1652-1705), director of the fortifications of the Meuse. It is said that this engineer was killed in December 1705 at the siege of Nice, decapitated by a cannonball while examining the effect of a battery at the side of Marshal de Berwick. The manuscript contains the directives given by Vauban for the manufacture and use of a cement used at Versailles by Nicolas Le Jongleur, the King's fountain maker. It is accompanied by 2 colour plates, with handwritten notes, listing proposed works in 1693 in the fortifications of the town of Philippeville near Namur: these plans bear Vauban's autograph signature.
