DESCARTES, RENÉ
Epistolæ, partim ab authore Latino sermone conscriptæ, patim ad Galico translatæ. In quibus omnis generis quæstiones philosophicæ tractantur, & explicantur plurimæ difficultates quæ in reliquis ejus operibus occurrunt. Amstelodami [Amsterdam], ex typographia Blaviana [Blaeu], 1682-1683. 3 volumes in-4, (230 x 165 mm). Stiff vellum, cold medallion in the center of the boards, smooth spines, speckled edges (period binding). Charming edition given by Blaeu, based on the edition of DANIEL ElzeviEr. In particular, this correspondence contains letters from Descartes to Mersenne and to Princess Elisabeth, Princess Palatine - daughter of Frederick V, Elector Palatine and King of Bohemia - then exiled to The Hague. Educated and curious, she came into contact with Descartes and maintained a correspondence with him that lasted seven years, until the philosopher's death. Some woodcuts in the text. A superb copy preserved in contemporary Dutch vellum. Minor soiling in places to the vellum, some foxing. Tchemerzine, IV, 296.
