KLOSSOWSKI (Pierre).
Roberte tonight. Illustrated by the author. Paris, Les Éditions de Minuit, 1953, in-12, paperback, 186 p. First edition printed at 1550 copies. One of the 50 first copies numbered on Johannot d'Annonay rag (n°14) illustrated with 6 original full page compositions by the author. The copies on vellum have only 4 of them. A singular work, on the borders of surrealism, famous for the central scene in which Roberte has to undergo the assaults of a dwarf and a colossus who break into her cabinet. In the eyes of Georges Bataille, who enthusiastically welcomed the novel in the journal Critique, Roberte represents the divine moment when the law is violated against all odds, when eroticism, at the antipodes of animality, is at once a curse and a miracle. Asked to illustrate his brother's novel, Balthus finally declined. The author therefore resorted to lead pencil himself and published his first drawings in Roberte ce soir. Rainer Mason in Eros invaincu, nº 124. Sarane Alexandrian, Histoire de la littérature érotique, p. 386.
