VERLAINE Paul (1844-1896).
Autograph sonnet signed (s.l.n.d.). 1 p. in-8. Mounted on paper. This manuscript is most probably the first draft of his sonnet Sur un buste de moi. From the title we note important differences with the published version, like "Sur un buste de moi ou Statuaire Niederhausern" which in the published version becomes "Sur un buste de moi pour mon ami Niederhausern", then Verlaine has redacted what should have been the first line of the second quatrain. Sur un buste de moi is the 68th poem of his eighth collection of poems entitled Dédicaces published in 1890, then increased by seventy-two poems in 1894, published by Léon Vanier. This poem, as the title of the collection indicates, is dedicated to his friend the sculptor Auguste de Niederhausern. "This bust which represents me, To the eyes of the posterity, To show him an imposing face, Full of gravity! (...) And behind these eyes with the black flames , a malevolent gentleman, But the sculptor had talent".
