AVENTURES D'UN PROVINCIAL (Les), ou Histoire... - Lot 24 - Giquello
AVENTURES D'UN PROVINCIAL (Les), ou Histoire du chevalier de Jordans. Paris, Bastien, 1782. 2 parts in one volume in-12, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, fleuron at the corners, gilt coat of arms in the center, smooth spine decorated, green title page, interior roulette, gilt edges (Binding of the time). First edition. Anonymous novel in which the author depicts the mores and vices of society through the adventures of a young provincial, victim in Paris of roués who ruin him and abandon him to his miserable fate, and who finds his charming Rosalie whom he had loved in Marseille. The warning to the reader of yesterday is also valid for the one of today: if he thinks he recognizes himself in these portraits of gamblers, usurers, women of the world, libertines, comedians, authors, etc., let him correct himself, there will be no more resemblance (preface). One finds also the portrait of a learned and honest Doctor, of a philosopher woman, that is to say educated, affable and beneficent, of a pious & estimable religious, of a tender, constant & sensitive Lover, etc. A very fine copy, finely bound in morocco with the coat of arms of Catherine II the Great (1729-1796), Empress of Russia. From the library of Florin de Duikingberg (bookplate). Small paper loss without gravity in the margin of the first leaf A1.
