In praise of the Duke of Enghien, speech which won the prize of eloquence... - AUDIBERT. Éloge duc d'Enghien, speech which won a prize for eloquence... Paris, C. J. Trouvé, 1827. Preceded by : ROGER. Société royale des Bonnes-Lettres. Report on the works which competed for the prize of eloquence awarded in the extraordinary session of May 30, 1827. Together 3 works in one volume in-8, long-grained tan morocco, border decorated with eight gilt fillets crossing at the corners, fleur-de-lis at the corners, coat of arms in the center, spine decorated with repeated fleur-de-lis, inner scroll, gilt edges (Simier). First edition of these two eulogies of the duke of Enghien, the first one ending as follows : may [...] come out a cry of horror that will frighten tyrants, that will force them to murder only with the dagger, never with the sword of the laws ! Copy with the arms of Louis-Henri-Joseph de Bourbon-Condé (1756-1830), the last of his branch, found hanged in the castle of Saint-Leu in 1830. He was the father of the duke of Enghien whom Napoleon had arrested, convinced that he was at the center of a plot, and then shot in 1804 in the moat of the château de Vincennes. Elegant binding signed by Simier, bearing his label of Relieur du Roi, rue St Honoré, n°152 in Paris. From the libraries of the Duchess of Berry, with her engraved armorial bookplate (1837, n°2268, erroneously announced as being in green morocco), and E. Chatoney (bookplate). Some light foxing.
