TACITUS. Opera. Recensuit J. N. Lallemand.... - Lot 90 - Giquello
TACITUS. Opera. Recensuit J. N. Lallemand. Paris, Desaint & Saillant, J. Barbou, 1760. 3 volumes in-12, lemon morocco, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the center, spine ornamented, green title and greeve, interior roulette, gilt edges (Period binding). Beautiful edition by Barbou, decorated with 3 frontispieces and 3 vignettes engraved in intaglio by Lempereur after Charles Eisen. Fine binding with the arms of Madame Sophie (1734-1782), the sixth daughter of Louis XV and Marie Leczinska. It is known that the volumes that belonged to the Ladies of France can only be distinguished by the color of the morocco on which their arms are stamped, the subtle lemon hue being reserved for the books of Madame Sophie. In his work on the bibliophile women of France, Quentin Bauchart dwells on the libraries of the daughters of Louis XV and cites about fifty books that belonged to Madame Sophie (t. II, pp. 123-180). From the Robert Johnson Eden library (engraved armorial bookplate and handwritten bookplate dated 1809). Some fine restorations; spine a little darkened as almost always for bindings of this color.
