Mahakala Chaturbhuja, Tibet, 18th century 85 x 67 cm. Applied and embroidered silk Four-armed Mahakala sits in royal ease on a brown-skinned body. His main hands hold the chopper and the kapala. The upper right hand wields a sword while the left holds a trident. He is magnificently adorned with a tiara decorated with five skulls, bracelets and necklaces of snakes, necklaces and belt of bone. A tiger skin surrounds his loins. His ferocious face with exorbitant eyes, open mouth revealing fangs, beard and bristling eyebrows. Offerings are placed in front of him. To the right and left of the composition, figures with lion and bird heads are part of his retinue. Although insolate, this applied and embroidered textile is of very high quality.
