MAIRAN (Jean-Jacques Dortous de).
Dissertation on ice or physical explanation of the formation of ice, & its various phenomena. Béziers, Étienne Barbut, 1717. In-12, brown calf, spine gilt, title gilt, edges speckled with red (Binding of the time). Poggendorff, t. II, col. 17-18. First edition of this work on the formation of ice, one of the most famous by Dortous de Mairan (1678-1771), mathematician and physicist from Béziers. Signed letter from the author on a blank sheet opposite the title page: For Monsieur le Chevalier Renau, by his very humble and obedient servant Dortous de Mairan. This is probably Bernard Renau d'Eliçagaray (1652-1719), a French military engineer to whom we owe a machine intended to draw the gauge of ships and a new type of more armed naval vessel: the galiotes à bombes. Notebooks a little short, with loss of some letters on the last leaf. With, bound at the head: - LA BIZARDIÈRE (Michel-David de). Caractères des auteurs anciens et modernes, et les jugemens de leurs Ouvrages. Paris, Grégoire du Puis, 1704. Wet stamp Jouannau de Nully à Lunay on the title. - SAINT-DIDIER (Alexis-Toussaint Limojon de). Le Voyage du Parnasse. Rotterdam, Fritsch & Bohm, 1716. Binding rubbed, snagged at the head cover.
