SAMBUCUS (Johannes).
Epistolarum conscribendarum methodus, unâ cum Exemplis, incerti autoris, Graecè & Latinè. Basel, Jean Oporin, s.d. [on the colophon]: March 1552. In-8, vellum, remnants of laces (Binding of the time). Extremely rare first edition of this important anthology of texts on epistolary art, given by Johannes Sambucus (1531-1584), a Hungarian humanist and scholar who traveled throughout Europe for a little more than twenty years and who built up a very large collection of Greek and Latin manuscripts. Printed in Greek and Latin, the work contains, among other things, a Latin translation of a treatise by pseudo-Libanius, a translation of two anonymous Greek manuals, and humanist treatises on the art of writing letters by Jean Vivès, Erasmus, Conrad Celtis, Hegendorff and Johannes Stomius (Mulinus in Latin). Copy in contemporary vellum, containing small handwritten annotations on pp. 77, 79 and 81. Stained vellum.
