Ijo mask, Nigeria Wood H. 84 cm Provenance... - Lot 31 - Giquello
Ijo mask, Nigeria Wood H. 84 cm Provenance : - Roger Azar, Paris - Galerie Ratton-Hourdé, Paris, 1998 Publication : - Tribal Arts n°16, Winter 1997, p. 54 This astonishing crest, which was worn horizontally, represents two stylized heads mixing human and animal features. The faces are articulated under a high domed forehead that extends the nasal bridge. A pair of tubular eyes and a cylindrical mouth with marked teeth take root on the recessed face. The chins extend disproportionately to form two open animal mouths. Above the forehead, answering to these lower appendages, two flared palettes unfold. Brass plates are nailed to the faces. The whole mask is covered with a thick black crusty patina, and some remains of red and white polychromy are still present on the faces, the eyes, the mouths. This type of mask probably represented nature spirits, to whom the Ijo paid homage through complex masquerades.
