Bambara ciwara crest, Mali Wood H. 46 cm Provenance... - Lot 36 - Giquello
Bambara ciwara crest, Mali Wood H. 46 cm Provenance : - John J. Klejman (1906-1995), New York - Mozes S. Schupf (1904-1994), New York - Sotheby's, New York, 6 May 1994, n° 43 - Galerie Ratton-Hourdé, Paris, 2001 Publication: - Galerie Ratton-Hourdé, Tyiwara, 2001, p. 23 Superb ciwara crest representing a hippotrague antelope, in a style characteristic of the Koulikoro or Segou region. The animal is camped on a rectangular base that was used to attach the rattan cap that the dancer placed on his head. The four short legs support a relatively flat body, from which rises a high neck supporting a half-spherical head. The horns seem to have been cut off at their ends in the past, as breaks are common at these fragile points. The triangular ears project vertically and are pierced to receive pearl ornaments. The great plastic success of the sculpture lies in the play of the tense lines and the empty space between the neck and the mane of the animal which descends from the head to the croup. The whole sculpture is decorated with engraved lines and covered with a rich material of use, some places crusty, others waxy or fat.
