*COIFFE, TAIWAN - Lot 183
*COIFFE, TAIWAN First half of the 20th century Red fabric, seed beads, vegetable fibers, mother-of-pearl, shells, tiger teeth L. 27 cm - D. disc top: 15 cm Exceptional headdress of ancient Formosa, embroidered with seed beads on a red fabric. In this multicoloured decoration and in the upper register, three masks, and on the neck cover, a stylized figure at the base. Dominating the whole, fixed to a delicate vegetal fibre structure, a disc centred on mother-of-pearl, around which thirty tiger teeth radiate, designates this headdress as belonging to a high dignitary. One of the rare corollaries is kept at the University of Berkeley Museum and reflects an ancient culture of which very few testimonies have survived. The aesthetic qualities, combined with the beautiful state of conservation, are remarkable. Provenance: Galerie Bernard Dulon, Paris, 1987 Private collection, Paris Bibliography: Chen Chi-Lu, Material culture of the Formosan Aborigines, Tai Wan Museum, Taipei; 1968
